Meta-owned Instagram is implementing an update to its ranking algorithms which will boost the visibility of original content on its feed.

The photo-sharing platform is going to tweak its algorithm to improve its ranking system and better highlight original content from creators, its head Adam Mosseri announced on Wednesday.

“We’ve added new ways to tag and improved ranking: Product Tags, Enhanced Tags, Ranking for originality,” Mosseri said in a tweet.

The new features added to Instagram’s tools for boosting ranking are:

  • Product Tags
  • Enhanced Tags
  • Ranking for originality

Product tags – enable businesses to highlight products from a catalogue and help customers learn more about what they’re selling in Instagram Stories, feed posts, Live and Instagram Video (formerly known as IGTV). When people tap the product tag on a post or story, they’ll be redirected to a product detail page. Creators can add more than one shopping tag to a post or story.

Enhanced tags – will let you create a category for yourself. So if you go in to your profile, edit profile section and that category will show up when you are tagged in a photo or a video. This will help the credit reach the respective creator.

Ranking for originality – This one is specifically focused though on this idea of originality. If you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you are resharing something you found from someone else.

He further said that the creators are the future of Instagram and the social media company wants to make sure they find success.

“Creators are so important to the future of Instagram, and we want to make sure that they are successful and get all the credit they deserve,” he added.

Additional Information

Instagram further said that it is crucial that the credit and monetisation go straight to the original creator on the platform. Without revealing much details, Mosseri said that the update to Instagram’s ranking algorithm will give more value to its original content, which means that content published by original creator will get highlighted on page and get more visibility amongst users than content which is republished.

“If you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you are resharing something that you found from someone else. We’re going to do more to try and value original content more, particularly compared to reposted content,” said the Instagram head.
Responding to social media consultant Matt Navarra, who asked why Instagram was leaning more into this now, Mosseri said: “As we lean more into recommendations it’s becoming increasingly important that we don’t overvalue aggregators, as that would be bad for creators, and therefore bad for Instagram long term.”
